Relationships

I’m reading the book “It’s Kind Of A Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini. It is about a depressed teen that entered himself into a mental hospital because he was afraid he was going to kill himself. He has a family of four, him his mom, his dad, and his little sister. They are a supportive family for Craig but they all act a different way to try to help him with his depression.

His mother is very sensitive and loving/caring with him. She calls him a lot and always calls him and tells him how much she loves her. I realized she is always person that he can go to when he is really said. The way I noticed this was from the day he was going to commit suicide he slept I her bed with her showing the reader how much he wants her to know he loves her. He also stated that when he feels really bed he sleeps in her bed and she brings him warm milk in bed. Him and his mom have a very important relationship hat he doesn’t share with any other family member or friend.

Him and his dad share a much more different relationship. Craig takes his depression very seriously and wants to get rid of it however his dad makes a lot of jokes about the hospital in hopes of lightening the mood. He is not trying to make fun of Craig but he struggles with communicating and being sweet and caring like the relationship of Craig and his mother. This sort of makes it awkward between Craig and his father and it seems like they see a lot of things differently and don’t act or think the same.

His sister is very young and doesn’t understand the world so well yet. This being said she is very sweet to Craig understanding that he is sad or mad but she doesn’t understand why. She tries her best to help Craig feel better, which he appreciates, but since she is young she doesn’t always say the right things and can make Craig feel even worse. However Craig wouldn’t show that her remark hurt him because he loves his sister and he knows that she would be hurt if she knew she said something wrong. The share a special bond where Craig and his sister tell each other secrets, Craig telling her about how she is feeling (honestly) not like ho he says to his parents “fine” and his sister tells him things that Craig’s parents say about him and his depression problem.
